One fine morning, a rooster sets off to see the world. Soon he's joined by two cats, then three frogs, then four turtles, then five fish. But one group by one, his new friends decide to head home, leaving the rooster alone again — and ready to return to his own comfortable home as well. Bold, colorful collage illustrations, a beguiling story, and a simple introduction to number sets, addition, and subtraction combine to make Rooster's Off to See the World a delight for Eric Carle's many young fans.

Hermit Crab moves out of his small shell on the sea floor, in search of a new residence. When he finds a bigger place, a sea anemone offers to move in with him; a starfish agrees to decorate the joint. A snail and a sea urchin are employed for cleaning and protection, a lantern fish for lighting and smooth pebbles are used for a wall. Hermit lives happily for a while, until it is time to move again, to a still larger place

The smiling pancake in the frying pan on the cover of this picture book is the end, not the beginning, of this wonderful story. With bright collage illustrations, Carle tells the story of young Jack who woke up and asked his mother for pancakes. She was certainly willing, but told Jack that she needed his help. From this point, kids learn what it takes to get the ingredients to make something as simple as a pancake. First the wheat is harvested, threshed, and taken to the miller to produce flour. Then Jack must collect eggs from the henhouse and milk from the cow. Next, his mother tells Jack that they need some butter so he is set to work at the churn turning the cream into butter. Finally, a fire is built, jam is procured from the storage shelves and then the ingredients as well as all the implements are ready to make a pancake. Jack's mother is a pro, she even flips the pancake high in the air to get it brown on both sides. Finally, Jack gets his delicious golden-brown pancake with strawberry jam on top.

Monica wants to play with the moon, but can't reach it, so she asks her father to get it for her. Ingeniously designed with several fold-out pages, the books opens out horizontally to show a very long ladder Papa fetches, opens vertically to show him climbing the ladder above a very high mountain, and unfolds into a huge spread of the full moon, where the ladder has led Papa. But the moon is too big for him to carry, so he waits while it grows smaller, until finally it is the right size to bring home to Monica. She jumps and dances and frolics with it, but it keeps shrinking, until one day it's gone. But not for long: a thin sliver soon appears in the sky, growing larger and becoming full once again. A splendid introduction to the monthly lunar cycle, this is also a wondrous work of art that will stand up to countless readings
