Introducing........ Barbie

The original Barbie doll was created in 1959 by Mattel owner Ruth Handler, to inspire young girls to have ambitions, and launched at the New York Toy Fair in 1959.

Barbie was named after Handler's daughter Barbara, who played with paper dolls and imagined numerous careers for them as students, cheerleaders or businesswomen. At the time, the only dolls available for young girls were baby dolls. Handler wanted to inspire other girls to dream positively about their futures, and created Barbie™: Teenage Fashion Model as an icon for girls with great ambitions.

Barbie, whose full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts, was first launched in a black and white-striped swimming costume, and was available with blonde or brunette hair.
Barbie's boyfriend, Ken, was first introduced in 1961 and was also available with brown or blond fuzzy hair, and dressed in beach attire.
Over the years, Barbie's family has grown to include five younger sisters, one younger brother and two cousins, beginning with Skipper in 1964. Barbie's siblings have their own groups of friends, too. Barbie's own best friend, Midge, was introduced in 1963. Today, Barbie's best friends are usually portrayed as Teresa, who was introduced in 1988, and Nikki, introduced in 1989.

Barbie's careers have been wide and varied, from fashion model in the 1950s to astronaut in 1965, inspiring young girls to take an interest in space exploration long before the first woman travelled in space. In the mid 1970s, Barbie became a nurse, a doctor, a ballerina and a flight attendant; and in the 1980s Barbie became Day-to-Night Barbie, a career woman balancing work with an exciting nightlife. Also in the 1980s, Barbie launched her music career with her band, the Rockers, with a style greatly inspired by pop star Madonna.

Barbie made her movie debut in Barbie in The Nutcracker™ in 2001. To date, Barbie has starred in over 12 feature films, including Barbie: Fairytopia, Barbie: Mermaidia, Barbie and the Diamond Castle and most recently, Barbie: Thumbelina & Barbie and the Three Musketeers.
